    WESTLIFE'S HISTORY

Relaxed, refreshed and bursting with energy, Westlife, the quiet superstars of the mainstream UK music scene, bounce back with their new album ‘Face To Face.’ It’s a world that they have dominated for seven years and the album features all the hallmarks of that reign - a collection of classic songs and future standards. In brief, ‘Face To Face’ finds Westlife doing what they’ve always done best.

After a brief interlude with their Rat Pack album of classic song sung in the style of Sinatra, ‘Face To Face’ is Westlife’s first collection of new songs since ‘Turnaround’ topped the charts in 2003.
“I think this album shows that Westlife are back in a big way. It’s got the best material we’ve ever released,” says Shane confidently. Agrees Nicky: “At the time Turnaround seemed like one of our best albums - and this one feels even better.”

A familiar blend of big ballads and mid-tempo tunes, balanced by the occasional up-tempo song, ‘Face To Face’ presents Westlife playing to their strengths – passionate vocals and memorable tunes. It’s a straightforward formula that’s been winning hearts and ears since the dawn of popular music, from the doo-wop days of the Platters, through the timeless harmonies of the Drifters and Coasters, to the slick modern sounds of Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, Take That and Boyzone. But no one’s done it with so much success as Westlife – 34 million album sales are testament to that!

Following four months’ holidays – the longest break of their entire career – the boys have returned to action sounding stronger, fresher and hungrier than ever. “I think the break did us good,” says Nicky, who spent much of his summer getting in shape in the gym. “We still look at ourselves as the luckiest band in the world, but when you do something so long and so frequently, you’re bound to need time to recharge your batteries.”

That freshness can be heard all ove* ‘**ce To Face.’ The band have never sounded in better voice and they’ve rarely had a better choice of material on which to show it. “We know we have to raise the bar each time we make an album and be bigger and better,” acknowledges Shane, who recently became a father for the first time.  After seven years together, their seventh album finds them at the top of their game, and it’s a big game they play in, with six multi-platinum albums in the UK alone.  Add to that the Brit Awards, MTV Award, 12 UK number one’s; Westlife are amazingly one of the biggest brands on the planet.

Songwriting and production duties are equally divided between long-term collaborator Steve Mac and Swedish hit-makers The Location, returning to the Westlife fold after working on their first two albums (and for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC among many others), with recording done in Ireland, Sweden and London over the long hot summer.

And the secret behind their rejuvenated sound – not such a secret really – is that they’ve just recharged their batteries with the longest holiday of their career. “We had nearly four months off and it felt like three years,” laughs Nicky. “The break made us realize how much we wanted to start work again. At the end of it I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio.”

A new start and a new chapter… but the Westlife story is far from over.

    You and I

There is something between you and I,
But it's too complicated that I can’t describe.
Is that because we are super shy?
Or you want me to speak out right.
Sometimes it seems I am going to die,
But thankfully, I am still alive.
Everything is so wrong in life,
I am sorry that I couldn't be always right by your side…

    A big irony to Chinese!

I heard a story the other day. I feel it interesting but it really shook me!

    Tell you the story first:

A Chinese boy dated with an American girl. It’s very late, maybe 1.00 AM. He drove her home. Everything is peace on the road. The boy ran the red light as if nothing had happened! The girl was shocked by the man’s action and severed relation by one stroke with the boy at once. When leaving, she told the boy that you dared to do such a thing and what won’t you dare to do in future?

The next year, the boy returned China, and he was employed by a very good company. A new girl friend found by him was dating with him at a restaurant. After dating, the boy drove him home. It’s the same as that of last time; they met a red light! The boy drew a teaching, and stopped in front of the traffic light. What a great change! However, the new one suddenly took offence! The boy was refused again for the girl told him that you daren’t to do this thing and what will you dare to do? What a fool!

The story is over, and what do you think of it?

I think it is a big irony! It does show the bad behaviours of a part of Chinese. However, I must claim that not every Chinese has the kind of behaviours! Most of us are civilised and polite. After reading the story, I feel we have a lot to improve! China fell behind many years ago, but she is becoming stronger and stronger nowadays! For the 2008 Olympics and 2010 Expo, being civilised Chinese people to welcome the friends from all over the world!

    THREE THINGS

three things must be defended: country, glory and family

three things must be controlled: feeling, tongue and behavior

three things must be thought deeply: life, death and eternity

three things must be abandoned: crime, ignorance and betrayal

three things must be avoid: laziness, brutality and taunt

three things must be rescued: pureness, happiness and peace

three things must be respected: firmness, benevolence and self-esteem

three things must be trained: reason, modesty and motivation

    I AM RESTLESS

    by: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

AM restless. I am athirst for far-away things.
My soul goes out in a longing to touch the skirt of the dim distance.
O Great Beyond, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that I have no wings to fly, that I am bound in this spot evermore.

I am eager and wakeful, I am a stranger in a strange land.
Thy breath comes to me whispering an impossible hope.
Thy tongue is known to my heart as its very own.
O Far-to-seek, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that I know not the way, that I have not the winged horse.

I am listless, I am a wanderer in my heart.
In the sunny haze of the languid hours, what vast vision of thine takes shape in the blue of the sky!
O Farthest end, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that the gates are shut everywhere in the house where I dwell alone!

"I am restless" is reprinted from The Gardener. Rabindranath Tagore. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1913.

    Feel the Night Shanghai

Yesterday evening, Stephen invited me to have dinner together in the small road near the Middle Huaihai Rd. Although a small road, it did facianate me with its old Shanghai's breath. The old stone houses with the purple-green walls and the narrow roads are still there, taking us back to Shanghai's old days.

It was an open-air restaurant with light music, and a sparse and scattered of people passed by. With the sunset, the stands appeared and vendors began to hail passers-by.

So long time did I feel the air in the Huaihai Rd. On my way home, my heart was full of the attractive night scene.

    DAWN IS BREAKING

My maths is always poor, but I find that I might have a little talent for maths! It’s wonderful. The story is not long, so keep patient and read the following.

About one week ago, I took a maths course to improve my poor maths. The teacher is famous and he gives lesson in Shanghai dialect, which is very interesting. Over 17 years old, it’s the first time for me to meet a teacher giving lessons in Shanghai dialect, although sometimes some teachers’ pronunciations of Mandarin (official language of China) are not very standard!

The dialect can’t change my dislike for maths. However, what changed my mind? It’s simple, very simple, just an exercise book. I’m not kidding. An exercise book did change my mind! It seems marvellous, but it’s true! ^ ^

I’m doing the book right now which contains a lot of exercises. I open it and finish several problems every day. Some are simple, and some are difficult! It’s almost the first time that I keep patient to do and analyze maths problems. The effects of these days’ work are the same as that of these years’. Maybe patience is the key to the effects!

I just want to tell the story to those who are puzzled with one of your subjects or tasks. Face it and keep patient, you will find effects, and get achievements!

Wish me succeed in maths! God bless you, James!

    Well Done, Stephen!

    Congratulations, Stephen!

Stephen, a boy from Northeast China, has been accepted by the Harbin Industry University which is a very famous university in China. I believe he has spent a lot of time in studying and used proper learning ways to face the challenge. Being a Chinese senior-high school student, I can deeply feel the diligent work he did.

Next year, I shall take the National University Entrance Examination, and now, I am working hard to face it. It is the only way for me to walk, that is, if I want to get a good job in the future, I must enter a good university next year! Perhaps it cannot be agreed by the most foreigners like the Americans, Europeans, etc. But it is the situation in China, and I must face!

Work hard, James… The success is nearer…

Congratulations once again, Stephen! Good for you!
